Work here.

Core42 is a specialist firm that publishes. This page is what we believe about the work.

What the work is

Advice that gets read, on places that get built

Protective security advisory for organisations, places and infrastructure. Threat and risk assessment. Crime prevention through environmental design and public realm safety. Protective design and hostile vehicle mitigation. Security zone consulting for Defence and government estate. Standing threat intelligence, briefed to executives and boards. The clients are government agencies, Defence and critical infrastructure owners, tier-one engineering and construction firms, developers, and architecture practices, across Australia and at times beyond it.

Most of the work never appears on this site. It is delivered under confidentiality, through engineering primes, or inside agencies. What is consistent across all of it is that the people who win the work do the work: there is no layer between the analysis and the client.

Beside the engagements sit five named research programmes. Vehicle as a weapon: an incident database and a taxonomy published in Crime Science and Terrorism and Political Violence. The State of CPTED in NSW: one hundred consultant reports coded against ISO 22341. Protective placemaking, security culture measurement, and Security 2030. The research is not a marketing department. It is where the methods used on engagements are tested, published, and argued with.

Work here ends up in print. Someone joining the firm should expect to write for publication, not only for a client.

What we hold each other to

Six standards, applied to everyone

These are the standards Daniel Versaci and Codee Ludbey hold themselves to. A person joining the firm is bound by the same six from the first day.

01 Sourced fact is separated from labelled judgement In every document, every time. A reader can see what we know, what we assess, and how confident we are.
02 The client's interest comes before the fee That includes writing that a measure is not needed, that a scope is larger than the risk, or that the work should stop. Advice that only ever adds is not advice.
03 Dissent goes in writing When the evidence disagrees with the room, the report says so, in the report, not in a corridor afterwards.
04 Work is reviewed twice By a principal before it leaves the firm. And for the research, by people we have never met: the methods behind our advice are submitted to peer review and published.
05 We are independent Our advice is not tied to any product, supplier or installer. A recommendation is there because the evidence supports it, and for no other reason.
06 The record endures Every recommendation traces to a documented basis that will still hold when it is read by a regulator, an insurer, or a successor five years from now.

What it asks of you

Four things we look for

  • You can write a clear paragraph under pressure, and you can tell the difference between a fact and an opinion in your own draft.
  • You read: standards, methods, the papers behind a technique, the incident record. You would rather be corrected by a source than flattered by a hunch.
  • You can hold a position in a design meeting full of people senior to you, and change it in the same meeting when the evidence says so.
  • You want your name on published work, and you are prepared to have that work reviewed by strangers.

How we hire

Rarely, and for someone better than us at something

We do not hire to meet demand. We hire when we find a person who is better than either principal at something the firm needs, and we would rather wait than lower that bar. That is why there is no list of open roles on this page.

Get in touch

If the work and the standards above describe you, write to us. Tell us about yourself, what you would want to work on, and where you think the practice should go next. Researchers interested in any of the programmes are welcome to write to the same address.
